How to find any note on the guitar

Use a Blank Guitar Neck Chart

Now that you know the fundamentals of guitar music theory you can apply this knowledge to the rest of the guitar neck very easily! First, get this printable blank guitar neck chart. You'll need it for this lesson.

Know the Distance

To map out all the notes on the guitar neck chart all you have to know are the distances in steps (1/2 step=1 fret; 1 step=2 frets) between notes and the open string notes of a tuned guitar. That's it! Nothing more. The notation and TAB of the open strings is shown below:

As a review from the fundamentals of guitar music theory lesson, take a look at the note names and distances between each note. Remember that a musical interval (term for the distance in pitch between two notes) of one half-step is equal to a distance on the guitar of one fret. Likewise, a musical interval of one whole step is equal to a distance of two frets.

All you have to know are what the open string (notes that result from picking the strings without pressing them down anywhere) notes are and what the distances are between the natural notes (A thru G as shown above) and you can map out all the notes on the entire neck of the guitar! Click the next button below to see the notes filling in little at a time. As you can see, we start with the open strings and add one note at a time according to the distances between each as we continue to move up the guitar neck.

Now get the blank chart referred to above and print it out if you haven't already. Spend a little time charting out the notes on the neck one string at a time until you get them all charted like you see in the example above. Then pick up your guitar and try finding them using the same process.

Allow the chart you've made to become your guide. Start with an open string and move all the way up the neck until you run out of frets. The fret numbers are located below the chart. You'll be surprised at how quickly you can learn where these notes are in relation to each other by going through this exercise.
