INFO & EXPLANATION

TABLATURE FOR THE BEGINNER

While tablature isn't the only form of notation you should learn, it certainly is the most prevalent on the Internet. You'll find mountains of it out there if you look in the right places. At the bottom of the page you'll find links to a few sites that will get you started on your journey to find songs in tab notation.

Make sure you understand that not all guitar music is available in tablature. Also, be sure to check out the next section that addresses how to read standard notation.

THE HOTFRETS SYSTEM

Many of our tutorials will include a Tablature line and a Notation line. A gray cursor will move along the timeline synchronized to animated fingerings and the audio of the lesson. Below is an example of the notation/tab line of a tutorial:

The advantage of viewing the TAB this way is that you see it lined up with the rhythms of the standard notation so you won't have to guess at it. The explanation for standard notation will clear this up even further.
