The Pick-strum Technique
INFO & EXPLANATION
THE PICK-STRUM TECHNIQUEThe "Pick-strum" technique is a handy thing to know. Whether you're a country music fan or not, this technique will come in handy more often than you might realize. It's also good right hand precision practice. So, let's get to it.
TO POST OR NOT TO POST, THAT IS THE QUESTION
Posting is the term I give to the technique used by the guitar player who extends their pinky finger to touch the body of the guitar while strumming or picking single notes. Most guitarists use this as a way of keeping a reference point to where their hand is without looking. I'm not going to say that, if you do this, you're gonna get in trouble with the guitar techniqued police, but I will say that you are limiting yourself in growth as a guitarist. Take a look at video loops below. One shows the free technique of just using the wrist and the other shows the limiting method of posting your pinky.

You can see how much more relaxed the example on the left is than the one on the right. Try practicing this alternating bass note technique while holding one chord. That should give you the ability to look at your right hand and focus on relaxing as you use a simple wrist motion.
